Corporate culture is not always easy to define, and many organizations
have numerous sub-cultures that cross departments, geographies and other
company boundaries. The culture of an organization can drive innovation
or passivity. It can drive authentic dialogue or careful, paranoid
communication. Leaders at all levels of an organization play a
significant role in the creation and evolution of a corporate culture,
and to a larger degree than many of them realize, the culture determines
ultimate success (or failure) of many projects and strategies. Unfortunately many leaders live in a "bubble" and have little or no awareness of the true culture within their organizations. And they are sometimes shocked when the culture rears its ugly head and reveals itself. The most effective business leaders work hard to keep a finger on the pulse of their business, not simply through metrics, but with direct "on the ground" connections.
